For infants and children, a Baptism or Christening service celebrates the arrival of a new family member. Parents and Godparents make promises on behalf of the child and through baptism commit to bring them up as followers of Jesus Christ.

When adults are baptised they make their own baptism promises, marking their public commitment to the Christian Faith.

What is the difference between a Baptism and a Christening?

Baptism and Christening are often used interchangeably but are two parts of the same service. Baptism is a Christian sacrament that welcomes the person being baptised into the Church family. Water is used in this sacrament which represents the washing away of sin and the start of a new life in Christ. Christening takes place as part of Baptism and refers to the naming of the person being baptised before God.

What is a sacrament?

Sacraments are sacred rituals that act as a visible signs of God’s invisible presence. They often use items like water, bread, water and oil to help us experience God’s invisible spiritual grace. Baptism and Holy Communion are both sacraments which Christians take part in following Jesus’ example.

Where can a baptism take place?

Baptisms normally take place in the parish church where you live, and anyone can ask to be baptised at their local parish church. To find out which parish you live in enter your postcode into A Church Near You.
